Our newest jack in our mule breeding operation, WINDY RIDGE GARNET, was bred and foaled at Windy Ridge Farm near Leslieville, Alberta, Canada. Carl and Sybil Sewell of Windy Ridge Farm have been breeding and raising working donkeys for over 30 years. Their first Mammoth jennet [in foal] was purchased from long time breeder, the late Phil Glick of Stryker, Ohio in 1979. From then on Carl and Sybil developed an interest in the preservation of Mammoth Jackstock which are on the Rare Breeds list in North America.

Windy Ridge Farm is registered in both Canada and USA for the purpose of breeding donkeys, and the majority of the foundation breeding donkeys, and the majority of the foundation breeding stock were hand-picked, registered donkeys selected in USA. The farm aim is to produce quality donkeys of working bloodlines, good conformation and disposition that will make pleasant, willing companions. To that end Windy Ridge donkeys can be found working in almost every province of Canada and many states such as California, Alabama, Arkansas, Oregon, Washington and Montana. They can be found skidding supplies and firewood, packing and riding on the trail, driving for pleasure and competition, as well as doing small farm work and in mule or donkey breeding programs.

The Windy Ridge Mammoth Jackstock breeding program is based on proven old National Champion bloodlines of Sieman's Glen [deceased], Black Bart and Dry Gulch Maynard [deceased]. Red Robin, Sieman's Bo-Jack, Old Ben and Jen Jack appear in the pedigrees to a lesser extent. Famous US National Grand Champion Halter and Performance Mammoth Jack, Black Bart was leased by Carl and Sybil in 1996 from Don and Irma Mode of Oregon. Bart celebrated his 25th birthday in 2002 at Windy Ridge Farm where he remains a permanent resident.

Malcher's Jack, Windy Ridge Garnet is a very rare red roan son of Black Bart. Only 13% of the herd of 30 head at Windy Ridge Farm are red roan, another 13% brown, while the balance of the herd are black which is the most common color for Mammoths. Garnet is one of a number of quality registered Large Standard [75% - 100% Mammoth blood], or Mammoth jacks the Windy Ridge Farm breeding program has supplied to the Canadian and American mule industry over the past two decades.

The 2002 Windy Ridge foal crop produced four black jennets and two black jacks. These foals have all been weaned and the two young jacks definitely have the look of breeding quality. For more information or a copy of the sales list please call [403] 729-3047.

PRICES AND VALUE
The low Canadian dollar value compared to the US dollar gives the USA buyer a LARGE advantage. For example - as of October, 30 2002 the exchange rate was $1.00 [Cdn.] was worth 64 cents [US funds]. In other words, $640 [US funds] will purchase $1,000 [Cdn.]. So that top quality weanling mule or Mammoth jack priced at $ 3,500 [ Cdn.] will cost approximately $ 2,240 [US funds]. Check with your bank for an exact exchange rate if planning a trip to Canada.

EXPORT FROM CANADA/IMPORT INTO USA
Always check with USDA Vet at the border crossing through which you plan to enter Canada. Regulations can change slightly from year to year. For each animal purchased for export to the USA, the seller must supply:

  1. Negative Coggins test [valid for 6 months]
  2. Export papers completed after a vet exam to declare the animal is in good health and has not been exposed to contagious disease. Valid for 30 days.
  3. # 1 and #2 above must be verified and signed by the Canadian Federal government Vet in Red Deer [our nearest location] prior to exporting the animal.

If blood samples for the Coggin's test are drawn early in the week [Monday or Tuesday], the lab results will be faxed to the vet by Thursday or Friday in time for export papers to be completed and signed by the Federal Vet. Some States require a permit number, which the vet will arrange. Approximate cost $ 125.00 [Cdn,]

Buyers may arrange to purchase via photos, video, etc. or may arrive with their own trailer and select an animal[s] early in the week to facilitate the Coggins test and Vet work. Trailers can be left at either farm while buyers take a 5 or 6 day holiday through the scenic Rocky Mountains [perhaps to The Outpost] or the many historic sites of Alberta. Upon return all the necessary vet work and export papers should be completed. The animal[s] can be loaded and driven to the Coutts Alberta border crossing on Sunday so as to be ready for an early start from Sweetgrass, Montana Monday morning.

The USDA vet on the USA side of the border will charge a fee to examine the animal and paper work [$ 25]. Always call the USDA vet at point of border crossing to verify working hours. To call the vet out after hours can be very expensive. Transportation can usually be arranged by commercial carrier, [reputable North American horse vans], if desired.

So why not consider a Canadian donkey or mule and combine a visit with a vacation too? Should your interest be in Miniature or Small Standard donkeys, there are some reputable breeders of these sizes in Central Alberta also. A visit, and a vacation combined with a variety of longears………what more could you want? We look forward to seeing you soon!
